Early life
Lycarion May, born François Benjamin, was born on 21 July 1870 at Bagnes, in Switzerland, and was baptised on the 24th.[1] At 18 he was received into the Istituto dei Fratelli Maristi; after his clothing on 15 August 1888 he took the name Lycarion.[1] The following year he was sent to Matarò, in Catalogna, and after his perpetual profession, on 15 August 1893, he was transferred to the community of Gerona, where he worked in the first school run by the Fratelli Maristi in Spain.[1]
Ministry
After a period as director of a nursery school, he was called to Barcellona to found and direct a school called Patronato Obrero de San José in the working-class district of Pueblo Nuevo, among poor and disadvantaged families.[1] In the same district the Escuela Moderna, of an ideology opposed to religion, and the organisation of the Jóvenes Bárbaros were both in open opposition to the Patronato Obrero de San José.[1]
Death and recognition
During the 'tragic week' of Barcellona in 1909, a popular revolt against the compulsory conscription decreed by the government, churches, convents and catholic schools were looted and burned.[1] On the night of 26 to 27 July 1909 the school building of the Maristi was set on fire; on the morning of the 27th the religious were tricked into leaving the house and were fired on as they reached the street.[1] He was the first of the group to be struck, and died; his body, battered with stones and machetes, was later recovered and buried in a common grave in the cemetery of Montjuïc.[1] Witnesses agree that the only cause of his death was that he was a religious and exercised his apostolate as a christian educator.[1] He was beatified on 12 July 2025 by Pope Leo XIV.[1]

Lycarion May, born François Benjamin May, was born at Bagnes in Switzerland on 21 July 1870 and baptised three days later. His home encouraged his religious vocation, and at eighteen he was received into the Institute of the Marist Brothers, taking the name Lycarion at his clothing on 15 August 1888. The following year he was sent to Mataró in Catalonia, and after perpetual profession was transferred in 1893 to Girona, where he worked in the first school directed by the Marist Brothers in Spain. After a period in the Basque Country as director of a nursery he was recalled to Barcelona to found and direct a school called the Patronato Obrero de San José, in the crowded and socially difficult quarter of Pueblo Nuevo.
In the same quarter stood the Escuela Moderna, ideologically opposed to religion, and the organisation of the Jóvenes Bárbaros, both set against the Patronato. In the rising known as the Tragic Week of Barcelona, churches, convents and Catholic schools were sacked and burned; on the night of 26 July 1909 the Marist school was set alight, and the next morning the brothers were lured into the street and fired upon. Brother Lycarion, first of the group, was killed.
