3pm on 10 January 1883 in El Suncho, Córdoba, Argentina of natural causes; interred in the cathedral of Córdoba; his heart was enshrined in an urn and venerated as a relic at the Franciscan convent in Catamarca, Argentina; the heart was stolen from the urn on 30 October 1990; the heart was found abandoned nearby on 7 November 1990; no suspect was identified in the theft; the heart was stolen from the urn on 20 January 2008 by Gemain Jasani who said that he had thrown it into a trash can several blocks from the convent; he was charged with the theft, but the heart was never recovered

Biografía

Beato Mamerto Esquiú Y Medina, también conocido como Mamerto de la Ascensión Esquiú, nació el 11 de mayo de 1826 en San José de Piedra Blanca, Catamarca, Argentina. Hijo de Santiago Esquiú y María de las Nieves Medina, desde muy joven sintió un profundo llamamiento a la vida religiosa, y se decía que incluso vestía como niño un hábito franciscano marrón.
