Beato Manuel Gonzálezserna Rodríguez

Blessed Manuel González Serna Rodríguez, also known as Manuel González, was born on May 9, 1880, in Sevilla, Spain. He was ordained as a priest of the Archdiocese of Sevilla on September 20, 1902.

From the early years of his priesthood, Blessed Manuel González demonstrated a profound dedication to his pastoral duties. He served diligently in various parishes and became known for his extraordinary zeal for promoting the Catholic faith. He was particularly committed to educating and catechizing the youth and encouraging their active participation in the life of the Church.

During a tumultuous period in Spain's history, the Spanish Civil War broke out in 1936, causing great social and political unrest. Blessed Manuel González found himself targeted for his unwavering fidelity to his priestly duties and deeply ingrained religious principles. On the night of July 19, 1936, at the outset of the war, he was unjustly arrested and imprisoned.

Four days later, on July 23, 1936, martyrdom awaited Blessed Manuel González as he was executed for his steadfast commitment to the Catholic faith. He died in the sacristy of his parish church in Constanina, Sevilla, Spain.

Recognizing his heroic witness and sacrifice, Pope Francis proclaimed the decree of martyrdom on June 22, 2023, thereby venerating Blessed Manuel González Serna Rodríguez. The faithful honor his memory and celebrate his feast day on July 23.
