Biografía

Blessed Manuel Torres Nicolau, also known as Manuel Torres Nicolau, was a devout Catholic and a member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by Saint Anthony Mary Claret. He was born on 15 October 1874 in Almacellas, Lleida, Spain.

Manuel entered the Claretians and made his religious profession on 16 July 1891, committing himself to a life of prayer, service, and evangelization. After several years of formation and study, he was ordained a priest on 13 May 1899, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to his pastoral duties.

During a turbulent period in Spain's history, Manuel Torres Nicolau found himself caught up in the horrors of the Spanish Civil War. Known for his unwavering faith and courageous stance against the persecution of the Church, he became a target for those who sought to suppress religious freedom. On 25 July 1936, in Lleida, Spain, Manuel was martyred, shot for his steadfast adherence to the Catholic faith.

Recognizing the heroic virtues and sacrificial death of Manuel Torres Nicolau, Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrdom on 21 December 2016, officially recognizing him as a martyr for the faith. This declaration allowed for his beatification, which took place on 21 October 2017. The beatification ceremony was held at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, where Archbishop Angelo Amato presided over the joyous celebration.

Blessed Manuel Torres Nicolau is honored and venerated as one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs, a group of courageous individuals who gave their lives for Christ during a time of intense religious persecution. His feast days are celebrated on 25 July, the day of his martyrdom, as well as on 1 February, in commemoration of all the Spanish Claretian Martyrs.

Blessed Manuel Torres Nicolau's life and martyrdom serve as an inspiration and a reminder of the courage and commitment required to remain faithful to one's beliefs, even in the face of adversity. His intercession is sought by those facing persecution, and he continues to be remembered for his unwavering faith and devotion to the Catholic Church.
