Beata Manuela De Jesús Arias Espinosa

Blessed Manuela De Jes√∫s Arias Espinosa, also known as Sister María Inés Teresa of the Blessed Sacrament and affectionately called Manuelita by those close to her, was born on 7 July 1904 in Ixtlán del Rio, Nayarit, Mexico. She was the fifth of eight children in her family, and from an early age, she displayed a deep spirituality and a strong desire to serve God.

In 1929, at the age of 25, Manuela entered the monastery of the Hail Mary in Los Angeles, California. She wholeheartedly embraced the cloistered life and dedicated herself to a life of prayer, contemplation, and sacrifice. Four years later, on 14 December 1933, she made her perpetual vows, committing herself to a lifetime of service to God as a consecrated religious sister.

However, her mission did not end within the confines of the monastery. In August 1945, in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico, Sister Manuela founded the Congregations of the Poor Clare Missionary Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. This religious congregation aimed to bring the love and mercy of Christ to the poor and needy, particularly through the Eucharist. Under her guidance, the congregation received papal approval in 1949 and 1951, allowing it to expand its mission further.

Not content with one congregation, Sister Manuela also founded the Missionaries of Christ for the Universal Church. This new institute sought to spread the Gospel and promote the unity of all Christians throughout the world. By the time of her death, she had established 36 missionary houses in 14 countries, and her dedication to the missionary work of the Church had touched the lives of countless people.

Blessed Manuela's profound spirituality and commitment to the Eucharist is evident in the over 6,000 writings she left behind. These writings serve as a testament to her deep faith and spiritual insights, providing guidance and inspiration to those who come across them.

On 22 July 1981, Blessed Manuela De Jes√∫s Arias Espinosa passed away in Rome, Italy, at the age of 77, due to natural causes. Her life and holy example were marked by her unwavering devotion to God and her tireless efforts to bring His love to those in need.

Recognizing her heroic virtues, Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed her venerable on 3 April 2009. Later, on 21 April 2012, Pope Benedict XVI beatified her, acknowledging her sanctity and the intercession she now provides for the faithful.
