Beata María Angélica Pérez

Blessed María Angélica Pérez, also known as María Crescencia or Sister Dulzura (Sister Sweetness), was born on 17 August 1897 in San Martín, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her parents were immigrants from Spain, and she was raised in a farm family. From a young age, María Angélica demonstrated a deep piety and devotion to God.

On 31 December 1915, María Angélica entered the Congregation of the Daughters of Our Lady of the Garden. She earnestly embraced her vocation as a religious sister and took her vows on 7 September 1918. Dedicated to serving God and His people, María Angélica became a teacher and catechist to children, imparting the teachings of the Catholic faith to the younger generation.

In 1924, Sister María Angélica was assigned to a tuberculosis hospital where she worked closely with sick children. For four years, she tirelessly cared for the young patients, providing them not only with medical assistance but also offering them spiritual comfort and guidance during their trying times of illness. Sister María Angélica's loving presence and compassionate nature brought solace and hope to those who were suffering.

However, her own health began to decline due to the challenging circumstances of working with tuberculosis patients. In 1928, Sister María Angélica was transferred to a hospital in Vallenar, Chile, where she continued to share the teachings of God and became a source of joy and comfort to many patients. Her deep faith and unwavering commitment to her vocation inspired those around her, and she was revered for her kindness, humility, and genuine love for others.

Blessed María Angélica Pérez passed away on 20 May 1932 in Vallenar, Atacama, Argentina, at the age of 34. Despite her relatively short life, her impact on the lives of those she encountered was profound. After her death, she was found to be incorrupt in 1966, a testament to her holiness and sanctity. She was re-interred in the College Chapel in Huerto de Pergamino, Argentina, where she continues to be venerated.

On 22 June 2004, Pope John Paul II acknowledged her heroic virtues, declaring her as venerable. Then, on 17 November 2012, Pope Benedict XVI beatified her, recognizing her as Blessed María Angélica Pérez. The beatification ceremony was celebrated by Cardinal Angelo Amato, the prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, at Pergamino, Argentina. The miracle attributed to her intercession, leading to her beatification, involved the cure of a person suffering from type A hepatitis.
