Biografía

Blessed María Jordá Botella, also known as María de Jes√∫s, was a courageous lay woman who dedicated her life to serving others and upholding her Catholic faith. She was born on 26 January 1905, in Alcoi, Alicante, Spain, and was baptized just two days later.

As a young girl, María received the sacraments of confirmation and first Communion, fueling her love for Christ and inspiring her to embark on a path of dedicated service to others. She received her education in convent schools, which further instilled in her a deep sense of faith and a desire to help those in need.

María became a member of the Confraternity of Saint Vincent de Paul, a Catholic organization that provides assistance to the poor and marginalized. With great zeal, she devoted herself to Catholic social work, reaching out to those who were suffering and helping them find solace and support.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, María became a target of the anti-Christian forces that were on the rise. As a result of her unwavering dedication to her faith and her tireless efforts to help those in need, she was marked as a threat.

In the early stages of the war, María was imprisoned for her Catholic activities. While in captivity, she faced numerous dangers, including repeated attempts by Communist militiamen to assault her. Despite the grave threats to her safety, María fearlessly defended her purity and remained steadfast in her faith.

Eventually, María's martyrdom came to pass on 26 September 1936, in Benifallím, Alicante, Spain. She was brutally murdered for her unwavering commitment to the Catholic Church and her refusal to renounce her faith in the face of persecution.

Recognizing her heroic virtues and martyrdom, Pope John Paul II, on 18 December 2000, officially recognized María Jordá Botella as venerable. On 11 March 2001, she was beatified by the same Pope, a testament to her sanctity and her exemplary life of virtue.

Blessed María Jordá Botella stands as a shining example of steadfast faith, courage, and sacrificial love. Her life and martyrdom inspire all Catholics to fearlessly live out their beliefs, even in the face of adversity. On her feast day, 26 September, we honor and seek her intercession as a powerful advocate for those who face persecution and struggle to live out their faith in challenging circumstances.
