Biografía

Blessed María Luisa Berm√∫dez Ruiz, born on October 10, 1893, in Subugueira, Coruña, Spain, was a dedicated nun and a member of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. She lived her life in service to God and the needy, following the example of Saint Vincent de Paul, the founder of her religious community.

María Luisa Berm√∫dez Ruiz entered the Daughters of Charity and took her vows, dedicating herself to a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience. As a nun, she committed herself to the care and assistance of the poor and vulnerable. Her compassion and selflessness earned her respect and admiration from those she helped and her fellow sisters alike.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, María Luisa Berm√∫dez Ruiz faced persecution and martyrdom for her unwavering Catholic faith. On August 18, 1936, in Almenara, Valencia, Spain, she was martyred for her refusal to renounce her religious beliefs. The Spanish Civil War was marked by a fierce anti-Catholic sentiment, and many religious figures, including Maria Luisa, became targets of violence.

María Luisa Berm√∫dez Ruiz's life and martyrdom serve as a testament to her unwavering faith and her dedication to serving others. Her sacrifice is a reminder of the persecution faced by Catholics during a tumultuous period in Spanish history. Despite the dangers she faced, she courageously held onto her convictions until the end.

Recognizing her martyrdom, Pope Benedict XVI, on June 27, 2011, decreed the veneration of Blessed María Luisa Berm√∫dez Ruiz. Her beatification followed on October 13, 2013, when Pope Francis officially declared her blessed.

Today, the memory of Blessed María Luisa Berm√∫dez Ruiz lives on as an inspiration to Catholics and all those who strive to live lives of faith and service. Her sacrifice serves as a reminder of the persecution endured by many during the Spanish Civil War and the strength of those who stood firm in their beliefs. We honor her on her feast day, which is celebrated on August 18th each year.
