Biografía

Blessed Maria Catalina Troiani, also known as Maria Caterina of Saint Rose, was born on 19 January 1813 in Giuliano di Roma, Italy. She was the third of four children born to Tommaso Troiani and Teresa Panici. Unfortunately, her mother passed away when Maria was just six years old.

From a young age, Maria felt a deep calling to dedicate her life to God and follow the teachings of Saint Francis of Assisi. She became a Franciscan tertiary, devoting herself to the care and education of girls. Maria's unwavering commitment to her faith led her to ultimately join the Franciscan order as a nun on 8 December 1829.

When she took her religious vows, Maria chose the name Sister Maria Teresa of Saint Rose, in honor of Saint Rose of Viterbo. It was a testament to her deep admiration for the saint's holiness and devotion.

Maria's missionary journey began when the Apostolic Vicar of Egypt requested a Franciscan school for underprivileged girls to be established in Cairo. Alongside four other sisters, she traveled to Rome to meet with Pope Pius IX on 4 September 1859, seeking his blessing for their mission. The Pope readily granted their request, imparting his blessing upon their noble endeavors.

On 14 September 1859, Maria and her fellow sisters, accompanied by Father Giuseppe Moden, arrived in Cairo to initiate their work. Together, they established the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Egypt, which later became known as the Franciscan Missionaries of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1950.

Sister Maria Teresa took up the role of Mother Superior from the founding of the congregation until her passing. Her leadership skills, coupled with her genuine care for the sisters and the people they served, contributed to the growth and success of their mission. Pope Leo XIII, recognizing her exceptional qualities, held her in high regard.

Blessed Maria Catalina Troiani passed away on 6 May 1887, in Cairo, Egypt, due to natural causes. She was laid to rest in the Latin cemetery in Cairo. However, on 3 November 1967, her remains were re-interred in the chapel of Clot-Bey in the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which serves as the headquarters for the Franciscan Missionaries of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Rome, Italy.

In recognition of her virtuous and heroic life, Pope John Paul II declared her venerable on 12 July 1982. Her beatification took place on 14 April 1985, with Pope John Paul II formally acknowledging her as Blessed Maria Catalina Troiani.

Through her unwavering devotion to God and her tireless efforts to serve others, Blessed Maria Catalina Troiani has become an inspiration to many, embodying the true spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi.
