Early life
Mária Magdolna Bódi was born on 8 August 1921 at Szigliget, in Hungary.[1] Her parents, both farm labourers, had been unable to marry because her father, of unknown origins, had no documents; she was registered as an illegitimate child but took her father's name.[1] Under the influence of her mother she attended the Latin parish, where after first communion and confirmation she served the children through the Szívgárda, an association that cared for the religious education of the youngest by devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.[1] In 1938 she took part in one of the spiritual retreats held in preparation for the international eucharistic congress of Budapest, presided over in May of that year by cardinal Eugenio Pacelli, the future Pope Pius XII.[1]
Vocation
She would have liked to embrace religious life, but since no congregation could accept her because of her parents' irregular situation, during a spiritual retreat she consecrated herself to Christ the King, making a private vow of perpetual chastity.[1] In 1939 she began to work in a factory, joining the association of working girls to offer moral and spiritual support to her companions, and gained the respect of her fellow workers.[1] Soon after the outbreak of the Second World War she and her companions helped many elderly people and mothers with small children, and assisted the wounded of the nearby hospital.[1]
Martyrdom and recognition
From 1944, as the war front approached her village and news spread of atrocities committed by Soviet soldiers entering Hungary, she declared herself resolved to stay faithful to her vow of chastity even at the cost of her life.[1] At dawn on 23 March 1945 Soviet troops reached Litér, where she lived; she had spent the night with her mother and others in the village shelter.[1] In the afternoon a Russian soldier ordered her to follow him into the darkest part of the bunker; a pistol shot was heard, and she came out urging the other women to flee.[1] The soldier climbed onto the roof of the bunker and shot her several times from behind, killing her; she died invoking the Lord.[1] Her body was recovered by her father, who gave it temporary burial in the village cemetery.[1] She was beatified on 6 September 2025 by Pope Leo XIV in Hungary.[1]

Mária Magdolna Bódi was born on 8 August 1921 at Szigliget in Hungary. Her parents, both farm labourers, had not been able to marry because her father, of unknown origins, had no documents; registered as illegitimate, she took his name, though he was a rough man, an atheist and a drinker. In that poor setting, under her mother's influence, she was formed in faith at the Latin parish, and after her First Communion and Confirmation gave herself to the service of children in the Szívgárda, the Guard of the Heart, which cared for the religious education of the youngest through devotion to the Sacred Heart. Her life was wholly marked by a spirit of faith that shaped her sacramental practice and apostolic ardour.
In 1938 she took part in one of the many retreats held in Hungary in preparation for the International Eucharistic Congress of Budapest. She would have wished to enter religious life, but no congregation could receive her because of her parents' situation, so she consecrated herself to Christ the King with a private vow of perpetual chastity. From 1939 she worked in a factory and in the association of working girls. She was killed on 23 March 1945 defending herself from the assault of a Soviet soldier.
