Beata María Phon

Blessed Maria Phon was born on 6 January 1929 in Ban Songkhon, Mukdahan, Thailand. She was the daughter of John the Baptist and Catherine Tan Pha, a devout Catholic family. Maria grew up in a pious environment, surrounded by the faith of her parents.

As a young girl, Maria lived with her aunt named Mary, who took care of her. She attended the local Catholic mission where she received a solid religious education. Maria's strong devotion and love for God were evident from a young age, and she was admired by those around her for her faith and piety.

Sadly, during Maria's lifetime, Thailand experienced a period of anti-Christian persecutions that began when the French left the country. Christians faced increased hostility and opposition, with many being martyred for their faith. Maria became a victim of this persecution.

On 26 December 1940, the feast day of Saint Stephen, Maria was shot and martyred in the cemetery of Ban Songkhon. She willingly accepted the ultimate sacrifice for her faith, remaining steadfast in her devotion to Christ until her last breath. Her courageous witness and unwavering faith inspired many, even in the face of adversity.

In recognition of her martyrdom, Pope John Paul II issued a decree of martyrdom on 1 September 1988, officially acknowledging Maria Phon's heroic sacrifice for her faith. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 22 October 1989, affirming her exceptional sanctity and proclaiming her as Blessed.

Blessed Maria Phon is venerated as a martyr and a model of faith for Catholics in Thailand and beyond. Her feast day is celebrated on 26 December each year, commemorating her martyrdom and celebrating her life of devotion and sacrifice.
