Biografía

Blessed Maria Tuci was born on 12 March 1928 in Ndôrfushaz, near Rrôshen, Albania. She grew up in a devout Catholic family and received her education at a Stigmatine school. Maria's strong faith and desire to serve God led her to become a Stigmatine postulant when she reached the appropriate age.

After completing her training, Maria became an elementary school teacher and a devoted catechist, imparting her knowledge of the Catholic faith to children. She was known for her dedication and love for her students, instilling in them both academic knowledge and spiritual values.

However, during the time of brutal Communist rule in Albania, Maria's faith and commitment to her beliefs were put to the ultimate test. On 10 August 1949, she was arrested by the Albanian Communists for refusing to provide information about other individuals and for rejecting the inappropriate advances of a member of the secret police.

Imprisoned and subjected to prolonged torture, Maria displayed immense courage and unwavering faith. She endured unimaginable suffering, including being stripped naked and confined in a sack with an angry cat. Throughout her agonizing ordeal, she held steadfast to her principles, refusing to compromise her integrity.

Tragically, the torture took a toll on Maria's fragile body, and on 24 October 1950, she passed away at the Shkodra Prison Hospital in Shkodra, Albania. Her death was a direct result of the brutal mistreatment she endured. Her body was later re-interred in the Stigmatine church in Shkodra, a place that held great significance to her.

Recognizing her heroic virtue and martyrdom, Pope Francis declared Maria Tuci venerable on 26 April 2016. Then, on 5 November 2016, she was beatified by Pope Francis in a ceremony held at the Square of the Cathedral of Shôn Shtjefnit in Shkodôr, Albania. The beatification mass was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, honoring the extraordinary life and sacrifice of Blessed Maria Tuci.

Today, Maria Tuci is remembered as a shining example of faith, resilience, and courage in the face of adversity. Her unwavering commitment to her beliefs and her refusal to betray her principles serve as an inspiration to Catholics worldwide. Blessed Maria Tuci's feast day is celebrated on 24 October, the anniversary of her martyrdom.
