Beata Maríaanne Doux

Blessed Marieanne Doux, also known as Sister Saint Michael, was a devout Ursuline nun who became a martyr during the French Revolution. She was born on April 8, 1739, in Bollène, Vaucluse, France.

Little is known about her early life and upbringing, but it is clear that she had a strong calling to religious life. In her early twenties, Marieanne joined the Ursuline Order, known for their commitment to education and service. She dedicated herself to a life of prayer, contemplation, and educating young girls, following in the footsteps of her fellow nuns.

However, the French Revolution brought turbulent times for the Catholic Church and religious orders. The revolutionaries sought to overthrow the monarchy and establish a secular state. As part of their campaign, they aimed to eradicate Catholicism and persecute its adherents.

Blessed Marieanne Doux, along with her fellow nuns, faced increasing hostility during this tumultuous period. Despite the dangers, she remained steadfast in her faith, refusing to renounce her religious vows or abandon her commitment to God and the Church.

Unfortunately, her unwavering devotion put her in the crosshairs of the revolutionary authorities. Marieanne and her Ursuline sisters were accused of counter-revolutionary activities and imprisoned in the convent of Orange.

On July 16, 1794, Marieanne Doux and her companions were led to the guillotine in Orange, where they gave their lives for their faith. Their martyrdom was a testament to their unwavering commitment to God and their refusal to abandon their religious beliefs, even in the face of extreme persecution.

The incredible strength and courage displayed by Marieanne Doux and her fellow Ursuline sisters during this dark period did not go unnoticed. Pope Pius XI, recognizing their heroic sacrifice and fidelity to Christ, decreed their veneration on March 19, 1925. Less than two months later, on May 10, 1925, Pope Pius XI beatified Marieanne Doux and her companions, officially recognizing them as Blessed Martyrs of the French Revolution.

Today, Blessed Marieanne Doux serves as an inspiration to Catholics and religious believers alike, reminding us of the importance of remaining steadfast in our faith even in the most challenging circumstances. Her martyrdom stands as a testament to the enduring power of belief and the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
