Biografía

Blessed Mariemarguerite Bonnet, also known as Sister Saint Augustine, was a Sacramentine nun who was martyred during the French Revolution. She was born on 18 June 1719 in Sérignan, Vaucluse, France.

Not much is known about Blessed Mariemarguerite Bonnet's early life or her family background. However, she dedicated herself to a religious life and became a member of the Sacramentine Order, a contemplative community of nuns founded in 1659 by Saint Peter Julian Eymard. The Sacramentines devoted themselves to perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and the promotion of Eucharistic devotion.

It was during the tumultuous period of the French Revolution when the Catholic Church faced severe persecution and many religious institutions were suppressed. In 1794, Blessed Mariemarguerite Bonnet, along with many other religious sisters, was caught up in this persecution. She and her companions were imprisoned in Orange, Vaucluse, France, and were ultimately sentenced to death.

On 26 July 1794, Blessed Mariemarguerite Bonnet was martyred by being guillotined in Orange, France. Her execution was a result of her unwavering faith and refusal to renounce her religious vows.

Blessed Mariemarguerite Bonnet's martyrdom was recognized and acknowledged by the Catholic Church. On 19 March 1925, Pope Pius XI decreed her martyrdom, recognizing her heroic sacrifice for her religious beliefs. Her beatification followed on 10 May 1925, as Pope Pius XI officially acknowledged her as a blessed within the Church.

Although not much detailed information is readily available about her life, Blessed Mariemarguerite Bonnet's unwavering commitment to her religious vocation and her willingness to endure persecution and then sacrifice her life for her faith serve as an inspiring example of courage and devotion to God. Her feast day is celebrated on 26 July, but she is also commemorated on 9 July as one of the Martyrs of Orange. Her memory and spiritual presence continue to inspire believers, reminding them of the sacrifices made by individuals during times of religious persecution.
