Biografía
Blessed Mary Teresa Bonzel, also known as Aline Bonzel, Maria Theresia, Regina Bonzel, or Regina Christine Wilhelmine Bonzel, was born on September 17, 1830, in Olpe, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. From a young age, she felt a strong calling to religious life, but her family strongly opposed her decision.
At the age of twenty, Mary Teresa joined the newly formed community of Sisters of Saint Francis of Perpetual Adoration. Along with eight other women, she took the veil and became a Franciscan tertiary. She assumed the name Mother Mary Teresa and quickly rose to become the director of the community.
Under Mother Mary Teresa's leadership, the Sisters of Saint Francis of Perpetual Adoration thrived and expanded their reach. By the time of her death on February 6, 1905, in Olpe, the order had established schools, hospitals, and orphanages throughout the world. The congregation had grown significantly, with sisters spread across different countries.
Mother Mary Teresa's exemplary life of holiness and her dedication to serving the poor and marginalized led to her being venerated for her heroic virtues on March 27, 2010, by Pope Benedict XVI. Her beatification took place on November 10, 2013, presided over by Pope Francis at the cathedral of Paderborn, Germany, with Cardinal Angelo Amato leading the ceremony.
The beatification of Mother Mary Teresa Bonzel was marked by a significant miracle. It involved the cure of a four-year-old boy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This miraculous healing contributed to the recognition of her blessed status within the Catholic Church.
Throughout her life, Blessed Mary Teresa Bonzel displayed great selflessness, compassion, and devotion to God. Her legacy continues through the works of the Sisters of Saint Francis of Perpetual Adoration, as they carry on her mission of love and service to those in need.
