Beato Matthias Shobara Ichizaemon

Blessed Matthias Shobara Ichizaemon was a layman in the diocese of Hiroshima, Japan. He was born around 1587 in Aki, which is now part of modern-day Hiroshima, Japan. As a devout Catholic during a time when the persecution of Christians was rampant in Japan, Blessed Matthias Shobara Ichizaemon lived a life dedicated to his faith.

Little is known about his early life, but his steadfast devotion to the Catholic Church became evident later on. As the Christian population faced persecution, Blessed Matthias Shobara Ichizaemon courageously embraced his faith and fearlessly stood up for his beliefs. He refused to renounce his Catholic faith, despite the immense pressure and threats from the authorities.

On February 17, 1624, in Hiroshima, Japan, Blessed Matthias Shobara Ichizaemon was arrested for his unwavering faith. He was subjected to a series of interrogations and tortures in the hopes of forcing him to renounce his Christian beliefs and embrace Buddhism.

Despite the severe physical and psychological torment, Blessed Matthias Shobara Ichizaemon remained resolute in his faith. He remained steadfast and unwavering, affirming his loyalty to God and the Catholic Church until his last breath.

The beatification process for Blessed Matthias Shobara Ichizaemon began on June 1, 2007, when Pope Benedict XVI recognized his martyrdom. On November 24, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI presided over his beatification ceremony, held at the Nagasaki Prefectural Baseball Park (Big N Stadium) in Nagasaki, Japan. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins.

Today, Blessed Matthias Shobara Ichizaemon is venerated as a martyr of the Catholic faith. His feast days are observed on February 17 and July 1 in the Diocese of Hiroshima, Japan.
