Beato Melchor Sánchez Pérez

Blessed Melchor Sánchez Pérez, also known as Father Melchor of Saint Augustine, was an Augustinian Recollect priest and martyr. He was born in 1599 in Granada, Spain.

Father Melchor dedicated his life to the service of God and joined the Augustinian Recollect Order. He demonstrated great devotion and commitment to the Catholic Church, seeking to spread the teachings of Jesus Christ.

In the early 17th century, Father Melchor was sent as a missionary to Japan, a land where Christians were facing intense persecution. Despite the risks involved, he fearlessly continued his mission to uphold and promote the Catholic faith.

Tragically, Father Melchor's determination to share the Gospel led to his martyrdom. On 11 December 1632, he was burned alive in Nagasaki, Japan, for his unwavering commitment to Christianity.

The feast day of Blessed Melchor Sánchez Pérez is celebrated on 11 December. Additionally, he is also honored on 28 September as one of the Augustinian Martyrs of Japan, alongside other missionaries who suffered martyrdom during the same period.

Following his martyrdom, the holy life and supreme sacrifice of Father Melchor were recognized by the Catholic Church. On 28 November 1988, Pope John Paul II issued a decree of martyrdom, venerated him as a blessed. Subsequently, on 23 April 1989, Pope John Paul II beatified him, acknowledging his virtuous and heroic example.

Blessed Melchor Sánchez Pérez continues to inspire believers with his unwavering faith, selflessness, and courage in the face of persecution. His life serves as a reminder of the power of devotion and dedication to the teachings of Jesus Christ.
