Biografía

Blessed Melitón Martínez Gomez, also known as Melitón of Guadix, was born on 10 March 1878 in Jérez del Marquesado, Granada, Spain. He was ordained as a priest in the diocese of Guadix on 1 June 1901, dedicating his life to serving the Catholic Church.

Father Melitón faithfully carried out his pastoral duties, providing spiritual guidance and support to the faithful in his community. He was known for his humility, kindness, and deep spirituality, which endeared him to both the clergy and the laity.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, Father Melitón was targeted for his religious faith and commitment to the Catholic Church. On 18 September 1936, he was martyred in Cuesta de la Reina, Nacimiento, Almería, Spain. He bore witness to his faith and the love of Christ until the very end, refusing to renounce his religious beliefs despite immense persecution.

The martyrdom of Father Melitón was recognized by the Catholic Church, and on 14 June 2016, Pope Francis declared him venerable, acknowledging his heroic virtues. Subsequently, on 25 March 2017, Pope Francis beatified him, celebrating the beatification ceremony in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce, Almería, Spain. The beatification was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, emphasizing the significance of Father Melitón's sacrifice and witness for the Church.

Blessed Melitón Martínez Gomez is remembered and honored for his steadfast faith, unwavering commitment to his priestly duties, and his ultimate sacrifice for the sake of his religious beliefs. His feast day is celebrated on 18 September each year, serving as a reminder of his martyrdom and an inspiration for faithful Catholics to remain faithful to their beliefs, even in the face of persecution.
