Beato Miguel Agustín Pro

Blessed Miguel Agustin Pro, also known as Blessed Miguel Pro, was born on January 13, 1891, in Guadalupe, Zacatecas, Mexico. He was the son of a mining engineer and grew up in a pious home. From his childhood, Miguel was known for his high spirits and cheerfulness, and he developed a strong affinity for the poor and working classes despite his privileged background.

At the age of 20, Miguel entered the Society of Jesus as a novice. However, his studies and training were interrupted by the outbreak of the Mexican Revolution. During this time, the government implemented policies of persecution against the Catholic Church, leading to the closure of churches and priests going into hiding.

Despite the danger, Miguel decided to continue his studies abroad and was eventually ordained as a priest in Belgium in 1925, at the age of 36. Driven by his unwavering faith and love for his country, he returned to Mexico the following year, fully aware of the hostile conditions awaiting him.

During this period, churches remained closed, and priests were forced to conduct their ministry in secret. Miguel, using various disguises, carried out an underground ministry, providing the sacraments and bringing the comfort of charity to the covert faithful.

In 1927, Miguel Pro was falsely accused of a bombing attempt. As a result, he became a wanted man and was betrayed to the police. Without receiving a fair trial, he was sentenced to death. On the day of his martyrdom, November 23, 1927, a photograph was taken of Miguel Pro. This image became iconic, as it captured his resolve and steadfastness in the face of death.

As the firing squad prepared to execute him, Miguel forgave his executioners, refused a blindfold, and with his final breath, shouted, "Long live Christ the King!" His fearless witness to the faith touched the hearts of many.

The government prohibited a public funeral for Miguel Pro, but regardless, the faithful lined the streets to pay their respects as his body passed by. The impact of his martyrdom resonated deeply within the Catholic community and beyond.

Blessed Miguel Agustin Pro's martyrdom did not end with his death. Instead, his sacrifice inspired others, leading to a greater unity and vigor among Mexican Catholics. His unyielding courage and love for Christ and his people continue to inspire and guide those who encounter his story.

Recognizing his exemplary life and death, Pope John Paul II venerated Miguel Pro on November 10, 1986, through a decree of martyrdom. On September 25, 1988, the same pope beatified Miguel Agustin Pro, declaring him blessed.
