Biografía

Blessed Miquel Sagré Fornaguera, also known as Father Benigne de Canet De Mar, was a devout Franciscan Capuchin friar who dedicated his life to serving God and spreading the teachings of the Catholic Church. He was born on 15 May 1890 in Canet de Mar, a small town in Girona, Spain.

From a young age, Miquel Sagré showed a deep spirituality and an intense love for God. Recognizing his calling to religious life, he joined the Capuchin Order and made his religious profession on 15 August 1911. He underwent rigorous formation and training, immersing himself in the Franciscan charism of poverty, humility, and service.

On 17 June 1916, Miquel Sagré was ordained a priest, and he wholeheartedly embraced his ministry to bring the Good News to all people. He tirelessly worked to help those in need, providing spiritual guidance, preaching the Gospel, and performing acts of charity and mercy.

However, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, the forces of anti-Catholicism and totalitarian ideology led to the persecution of priests and religious. Tragically, on 19 August 1936, Father Miquel Sagré was mercilessly murdered by Marxists for his unwavering faith and dedication to the Church. He was martyred in the street in Horta, Barcelona, Spain, sacrificing his life for his beliefs.

After his death, the memory of Father Miquel Sagré Fornaguera continued to inspire and touch the hearts of many. Recognizing his martyrdom and his virtuous life, Pope Francis declared him venerable on 5 June 2015. This official recognition acknowledged his heroic virtues, his commitment to the Gospel, and his ultimate sacrifice.

Further honoring Father Miquel Sagré's exemplary life, Pope Francis beatified him on 21 November 2015. A solemn ceremony took place at the cathedral of Santa Creu i Santa EulÖlia in Barcelona, Spain, presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato. This beatification recognized him as a blessed, a model of faith and sanctity for the Catholic Church.

Today, the feast day of Blessed Miquel Sagré Fornaguera is celebrated on 19 August, marking the anniversary of his martyrdom. Faithful believers around the world venerate him as a powerful intercessor and an inspiring example of steadfast devotion to God, even in the face of persecution and martyrdom. His life teaches us the importance of unwavering faith, compassion for the poor, and commitment to living the Gospel in our own time.

May the blessed memory of Father Miquel Sagré Fornaguera continue to inspire us all to live lives of faith, holiness, and dedication to Christ.
