Biografía

Blessed Ndue Serreqi, also known as Karl, was born on 26th February 1911 in Shkodrô, Albania. Educated by Franciscan friars, he developed a deep love for the Catholic faith from a young age. Inspired by their teachings, he joined the Order as a young man, committing his life to the service of God.

As a seminarian in Brescia, Italy, Ndue Serreqi studied theology and prepared for his ordination to the priesthood. In June 1936, he was ordained a priest, taking the name Father Karl. Immediately after his ordination, he returned to his homeland of Albania to serve as a priest in the mountain villages.

During this period, Albania was under Communist rule, and tensions were mounting against the Catholic Church. On 9th October 1946, Father Karl was arrested by the Communist authorities, who sought information about the confessions of anti-Communist rebels. Despite facing imprisonment and torture, Father Karl remained steadfast in his commitment to uphold the seal of the Confessional and refused to divulge any information.

As a result of his refusal, on 18th January 1947, Father Karl was sentenced to death by the Communist regime. However, this sentence was later changed to life imprisonment. For the next seven years, he endured relentless abuse and neglect while imprisoned. The adverse conditions took a severe toll on his health, and it was ultimately the mistreatment that led to his death on 4th April 1954 in Burrel, Shkodrô, Albania.

Father Karl's unwavering faith, courage, and sacrifice in the face of persecution marked him as a martyr for the Catholic faith. His dedication to the sanctity of the Confessional and refusal to compromise his beliefs earned him the admiration of many.

Recognizing his martyrdom, Pope Francis venerated Blessed Ndue Serreqi on 26th April 2016, issuing a decree acknowledging his sacrifice. Later, on 5th November 2016, Pope Francis beatified him, marking a significant step towards his canonization. The beatification ceremony took place at the Square of the Cathedral of Shôn Shtjefnit in Shkodôr, Albania, presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.

Blessed Ndue Serreqi's life serves as a testament to the strength and endurance of faith in the face of persecution. His memory continues to inspire countless believers, reminding them of the importance of remaining steadfast in their commitment to God, even in the most challenging circumstances.
