Early life
Nicolò Rusca was born at Bedano (Canton Ticino) in April 1563.[1] He was formed at the Collegio Elvetico in Milan under Carlo Borromeo.[1]
Ministry
He was elected archpriest of Sondrio in 1590, in troubled times, both because of the conflict between Catholics and Reformed after the spread of Zwinglian and Calvinist reforms among the Grigioni, to whom Valtellina, Chiavenna and Bormio were subject, and because of the decline of the traditional church institutions.[1] He guided the Catholic community of Sondrio and of the whole Valtellina, but fell victim to the growing conflicts between political-religious factions, above all within the Tre Leghe.[1]
Martyrdom and recognition
Arrested in the summer of 1618 and taken prisoner to Thusis, he was tried by a partisan tribunal that expressed a radical political-religious group.[1] Having rejected all the accusations against him, he was tortured and died of it on 4 September of the same year.[1] He was beatified on 21 April 2013 by Pope Francis.[1]
