Beato Pascual Fortuño Almela

Blessed Pascual Fortuño Almela, also known as Blessed Pascual Fortuño, was born on 3 March 1886 in Villareal, Castellón, Spain, to a pious and hard-working family. He was baptized at the tender age of one day, symbolizing the early beginnings of his strong faith. Pascual's devoutness and desire to serve God led him to join the Franciscan Friar Minor novitiate at the early age of 12.

After years of dedicated study and spiritual formation, Pascual made his solemn profession as a Franciscan Friar Minor on 24 January 1909. He furthered his theological education at the esteemed Franciscan school in Onteniente, Spain. In recognition of his knowledge and commitment, Pascual was ordained as a priest on 15 August 1913 in Teruel, Spain.

Following his ordination, Blessed Pascual Fortuño Almela began his ministry as a teacher, imparting valuable wisdom to others. He then embarked on a significant journey to Argentina, where he spent four years serving as a parish priest. Pascual's dedication to his ministry and his unwavering devotion to God earned him great admiration among the faithful.

Upon his return to Spain, Blessed Pascual Fortuño Almela was entrusted with the responsibility of teaching novices, sharing his profound spirituality and guiding others in their spiritual growth. He served as the Vicar of novices at Vest-Valencia in 1931, dedicating himself to the formation and guidance of those aspiring to religious life.

Sadly, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War marked a period filled with persecution and violence against the Catholic Church. This tumultuous time in Spain led to the martyrdom of many faithful individuals, including Blessed Pascual Fortuño Almela. On 8 September 1936, Pascual was brutally shot and stabbed in the chest with a bayonet on the road outside Castellón, Spain. His sacrificial death is a testament to his steadfast faith and commitment to Christ.

Blessed Pascual Fortuño Almela was initially buried in the cemetery of Castellón but was later re-interred in his hometown of Villareal, Spain, on 3 November 1938. In recognition of his holiness and martyrdom, his relics were enshrined in the Franciscan church on 12 June 1967, serving as a reminder of his unwavering faith.

His exemplary life and valiant death did not go unnoticed, as Pope John Paul II declared him venerable on 20 December 1999, recognizing his heroic virtue and martyrdom. Blessed Pascual Fortuño Almela was subsequently beatified on 11 March 2001 by Pope John Paul II, a solemn acknowledgment of his sanctity and his ultimate sacrifice for his faith.

Blessed Pascual Fortuño Almela remains an inspiration to believers worldwide, a true model of selflessness and dedication to God's calling, especially in the face of immense adversity. His feast days are celebrated on 8 September and 20 November as one of the Martyred Friars Minor of Valencia, commemorating his courage and witness to the Catholic faith.
