Early life
Pedro María Ramírez Ramos was born at La Plata on 23 October 1899 and was baptised the next day by father Cayetano de las Maravillas, a trinitarian.[1] Of his parents' seven children, two became priests: he and Leonardo, who entered the Compagnia di Jesus.[1] At twelve he entered the minor seminary, then the major seminary, receiving the tonsure and minor orders; at twenty, beset by doubts about his future, he left the seminary and for eight years worked as a teacher, helping parish priests with catechesis and music.[1] For a time he considered marriage, but both he and the young woman came to see that married life was not for them; she entered a convent and he returned to the seminary.[1]
Priesthood
In 1928, invited by the archbishop of Ibagué, monsignor Rodríguez, he resumed theology, and was ordained priest on 21 June 1931.[1] Ten days after ordination he was named assistant in the parish of Chaparral, whose parish priest, father Emilio Dávila, was a close friend.[1] In July 1934 he was named parish priest of Cunday, where he remained until 1943; he was then given charge of the parish of El Fresno, and in 1946 was named parish priest of Armero.[1] Arriving at Armero in July 1946, he found ignorance, forced dechristianisation, aggressive protestant sects, intense secularist propaganda and communists openly hostile to the church.[1]
Death and recognition
On 9 April 1948, learning that revolution had broken out, he moved the blessed sacrament from the parish church to the chapel of the school of the eucharistic sisters, and helped the religious to flee.[1] Two hours later a mob with machetes and weapons broke into the parish house looking for him; the next day the mayor urged him not to return home, but he would not leave the blessed sacrament or the sisters.[1] At 4 in the afternoon shots rang out in the church; he took the last consecrated host as viaticum, gave himself up to his persecutors, and was dragged into the street.[1] In the town square he was struck on the head with a machete; falling, he knelt, wiped the blood from his face and asked forgiveness for his killers: «Padre, perdonali. Tutto per Christ».[1] His body lay in the square until sunset and was then dragged near the cemetery; some days later his relatives took it to bury it in the family chapel beside his mother.[1] He was beatified on 8 September 2017 by Pope Francis.[1]
