Biografía

Blessed Pedro Meca Moreno, also known as Pedro de Meca, was born on 16 December 1883 in Zurgena, Almeria, Spain. He grew up in a devout Catholic family and from a young age, he displayed a strong desire to serve God and the Church. At the age of 23, Pedro entered seminary and was ordained as a priest of the diocese of Almería on 9 June 1906.

Following his ordination, Father Pedro served as a parish priest in Sierro, a small town in Almería. Known for his kindness, humility, and dedication to his parishioners, he quickly became loved and respected by the local community.

Tragically, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, Spain was torn apart by political and religious conflicts. Father Pedro Meca Moreno remained steadfast in his faith and commitment to the Catholic Church, despite the growing persecution of priests and religious figures.

In September 1936, Father Pedro was captured by anti-Catholic forces and taken to Pozo de la Lagarta, a place near Tabernas, Almería. There, he faced intense persecution for his refusal to renounce his faith and loyalty to the Church. On 1 September 1936, he was martyred, sacrificing his life for his beliefs.

Father Pedro's martyrdom and unwavering faith in the face of adversity did not go unnoticed. On 14 June 2016, Pope Francis declared him to be venerable, recognizing his heroic virtues. And on 25 March 2017, Pope Francis beatified him, proclaiming him Blessed Pedro Meca Moreno.

The beatification ceremony took place in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce, Almería, Spain, and was presided by Cardinal Angelo Amato. This momentous event was an acknowledgement of Father Pedro's sanctity and his sacrifice for the Catholic Church.

Blessed Pedro Meca Moreno serves as an inspiring example of fidelity to the Gospel and the willingness to give one's life for the sake of one's faith. His memory and intercession continue to be celebrated by the faithful, particularly on his feast day, which falls on 1 September. Through his beatification, he serves as a role model and a reminder of the courage and steadfastness that all Catholics should aspire to in their own lives.
