Early life
Pere Tarrés I Claret was born on 30 May 1905 at Manresa, in the province of Barcelona, to Francesc Tarrés Puigdellívol and Carme Claret Masats, who also had two daughters, Francesca and Maria; he was baptised on 4 June.[1] Because of his father's work as a mechanic the family moved often; he received confirmation at Badalona on 31 May 1910 and made his first communion on 1 May 1913.[1] In 1914 the family returned to Manresa, where he studied with the Padri Gesuiti.[1]
Medicine
A scholarship allowed him to take his baccalaureate at the college of S. Ignazio, and a second, obtained through some doctors who admired him, gave him access to the degree course in medicine at the university of Barcelona.[1] He belonged to the Federació Jovens Cristians, which was Azione Cattolica as Pope Pius XI then conceived it.[1] In 1927, at Monistrol de Calders, he took a vow of chastity with the approval of his spiritual director.[1] In 1928, having completed his degree in medicine with a special prize, he settled in Barcelona, and with his colleague Dr. Gerardo Manresa founded the sanatorium-clinic of Nuestra Señora de la Merced.[1]
Priesthood
In July 1938 he had to enlist in the republican army as a doctor; he devoted part of his time to studies in preparation for the priesthood.[1] He entered the seminary of Barcelona on 29 September 1939.[1] He was ordained priest on 30 May 1942, and in 1943 was sent to the pontifical university of Salamanca, where he obtained the licentiate in theology on 13 November 1944.[1] Back in Barcelona he received several pastoral charges, among them assistant to the women's and girls' centre of Azione Cattolica in the parish of San Vicente de Sarriá in 1944.[1]
Death and recognition
On 17 May 1950 a biopsy revealed a lymphoblastic lymphosarcoma; he died on 31 August 1950, aged forty-five, in the clinic he had founded.[1] He was buried in the cemetery of Montjuic; on 6 November 1975 his remains were moved to the parish church of San Vicente di Sarrià.[1] He was beatified on 5 September 2004 by Pope John Paul II.[1]
