Beato Pedro Jo Yongsam

Blessed Petrus Jo Yongsam, also known as Peter, was a layman martyr in the Apostolic Vicariate of Korea. He was born in Yanggeon, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, and lived during a particularly challenging period in the history of Catholicism in Korea.

Petrus Jo Yongsam remains a significant figure in the history of the Catholic Church in Korea as he was among the Martyrs of Korea. These martyrs were a group of individuals who embraced the Christian faith in the face of severe persecution, leading to their ultimate sacrifice.

Not much is known about the early life of Petrus Jo Yongsam, but his unwavering dedication to his faith and his willingness to stand firm in the face of persecution made him a revered figure among the Catholic community. He lived during a time when Catholicism was strictly forbidden by the ruling Joseon Dynasty, which led to the persecution of Christians.

Despite the risks involved, Petrus Jo Yongsam openly professing his faith and actively participated in the Catholic community. However, this put him under the watchful eye of the authorities, who constantly sought to eradicate Christianity from the region.

On March 27, 1801, Petrus Jo Yongsam was arrested and brought before local authorities in Cheongju, Chungcheong-do, South Korea. His crime was nothing more than refusing to renounce his Christian beliefs. Despite the many attempts made by the authorities to pressure him into recanting, Peter remained steadfast in his faith and refused to betray his beliefs.

As a result, Petrus Jo Yongsam was subjected to severe torture and mistreatment. However, not even the harshest of methods could shake his resolve. Instead, his unwavering faith only seemed to strengthen throughout his ordeal.

Finally, on that same day, March 27, 1801, Petrus Jo Yongsam was martyred for his Christian faith. He joined the countless other martyrs of Korea who faced persecution and death for their dedication to Catholicism. His sacrifice and steadfastness continue to inspire and guide the faithful today.

Blessed Petrus Jo Yongsam was venerated on February 7, 2014, by Pope Francis with a decree on martyrdom, recognizing his heroic witness to Christ. Later, on August 15, 2014, Pope Francis beatified him, officially acknowledging him as a Blessed of the Catholic Church.

The legacy of Blessed Petrus Jo Yongsam and the Martyrs of Korea continue to serve as a reminder of the faith and dedication of these early Korean Catholics. Their willingness to sacrificially give their lives for their beliefs inspires and encourages both the Catholic community in Korea and believers around the globe.
