Beato Pedro de Santa María

Blessed Petrus of Saint Mary, also known as Pietro di Santa Maria, was born in Omura, Nagasaki, Japan in 1610. From a young age, he showed great devotion to the Catholic faith and began his studies to become a catechist at the age of 13 under the guidance of Blessed Luis Bertrán.

Petrus was deeply inspired by the work of the missionaries in Japan and dedicated himself to supporting their efforts. He selflessly used his wages to purchase supplies and provide assistance to the missionaries, helping to strengthen the faith of new Christians and spread the teachings of Catholicism.

In a time of persecution against Catholics, Petrus took refuge in a leper colony to hide from the authorities. Despite the danger, he remained steadfast in his commitment to the faith and continued to support the missionaries in any way he could.

Unfortunately, Petrus was eventually discovered by the authorities and arrested. He was imprisoned in Kuwara, Japan, where he became a member of the Dominican Order as a cooperator brother. Though facing imprisonment and persecution, he remained unwavering in his faith and continued to offer support to his fellow prisoners and share the gospel.
