Premonstratensian canon and priest, martyr of the French Revolution at Coutances, 1757-1793
Early life
Pierre-Adrien Toulorge was born on 4 May 1757 at Muneville-le-Bingard, in the district called La Quièze, the last of three children of a peasant family.[1] He was baptised on the day of his birth, and four days later his mother died.[1] Having felt a call to the priesthood in childhood, he was educated first in a college and then at the seminary of Coutances, and was ordained a priest in 1782.[1]
Vocation
He became curate at Doville, a very poor parish under the patronage of the Premonstratensian abbey of Blanchelande, and asked to join that community.[1] He made his novitiate at Beauport and in 1788 returned to Blanchelande as a canon regular.[1] When the law suppressing religious orders took effect during the Revolution, he declared on 10 June 1790 his wish to continue community life with two confreres, but was forced to leave the abbey, remaining in the surrounding area.[1]
Persecution
After the law of 26 August 1792 imposed an oath of loyalty to the Civil Constitution on all clergy with public functions, he left France for exile by mistake, believing himself among the religious of the diocese of Coutances obliged to take refuge on the island of Jersey.[1] Realising the error, he returned and lived in hiding, celebrating the Eucharist from time to time within the territory of his former abbey.[1] During the Terror he was denounced and arrested on 3 September 1793, carrying in a bag hand-copied canons for the celebration of the Eucharist, the white Premonstratensian habit and other objects of worship.[1] Questioned by the authorities of Carentan as a refractory, clandestine and emigrated priest, he at first denied the charges, then admitted them rather than save his life with a lie.[1]
Death and recognition
The tribunal condemned him to the guillotine without any mitigation.[1] He was beheaded on 13 October 1793, and a witness who was then a boy of ten later reported his last words: a prayer entrusting his spirit to God, asking for the restoration and preservation of the Church, and forgiving his enemies.[1] His body was buried in the cemetery of San Pietro at Coutances.[1] He was beatified on 29 April 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI.[1]
