Beato Raffaele Of Barletta

Blessed Raffaele Of Barletta, also known as Raphael, was born in Cattaro, Dalmatia (modern Kotor, Montenegro). He was a devout Catholic who dedicated his life to serving God and others. Seeking a deeper spiritual life, Raffaele left his native Cattaro and journeyed to Barletta, Italy, where he joined the Servants of Mary.

Raffaele's humility and selflessness were evident in his daily life. He spent his days begging for food and alms to support his house. Despite his own meager circumstances, he generously gave away much of what he begged, including the food and alms, to those less fortunate. His acts of charity ensured that the provisions never made it back to the convent, as he truly lived the Gospel message of feeding the hungry and caring for the poor.

Throughout his life, Raffaele remained deeply devoted to the Eucharist. He spent his nights in Eucharistic adoration, contemplating the presence of Christ in the blessed sacrament. His commitment to prayer and contemplation was so fervent that he did not even have a designated cell or bed assigned to him, as he was constantly absorbed in work and prayer.

On July 14, 1566, Brother Raffaele had a significant and spiritually profound experience. While asleep in front of the Eucharist, he had a vivid dream in which he was informed of his imminent death. Moved by this revelation, Raffaele quickly woke up and sought out a superior to make his confession and receive Communion. Afterward, he returned to the church to continue his prayer in the presence of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

It was in this holy and contemplative state that Raffaele quietly passed away. On that sacred altar within the church of the Servite convent, he peacefully completed his earthly pilgrimage and entered into eternal life with God.

Throughout his life, Raffaele was known for his profound spirituality, deep humility, and selfless acts of charity. He embodied the spirit of the Servants of Mary, dedicating himself wholly to the service of God and others. It is said that his representation is associated with bread, symbolizing his generosity in giving away bread to the poor. Raffaele's feast day is celebrated on July 14th, commemorating the day of his blessed passing. Although he has not been venerated or officially beatified, his life and example continue to inspire and touch the hearts of many faithful Catholics.
