Beato Roberto Thorpe

Blessed Robert Thorpe, born around 1560 in Yorkshire, England, was a Catholic martyr during the Elizabethan era. He is also known as "Blessed Robert Thorpe of York" and sometimes referred to as "Robert Thorpe of York."

Blessed Robert Thorpe began his journey toward priesthood by studying at the English College in Rheims, France, on 1 March 1583. After two years of dedicated study, he was ordained as a priest in April 1585. Filled with a fervent desire to serve the covert Catholic population in Yorkshire, he returned to England on 9 May 1585.

Despite facing immense risks, Blessed Robert Thorpe bravely ministered to the faithful, offering spiritual solace and celebrating Mass in secret. However, his activities did not go unnoticed, and he was betrayed to a justice of the peace by someone who had seen him preparing palm fronds for the upcoming Palm Sunday celebrations. This act of devotion eventually led to his arrest.

In the early morning of Palm Sunday, 1591, Blessed Robert Thorpe was apprehended in bed by the authorities who charged him with the crime of being a Catholic priest. He was subsequently imprisoned in York, North Yorkshire, awaiting trial and martyrdom.

Blessed Robert Thorpe's unwavering faith and dedication to his vocation were evident throughout his imprisonment. Despite facing attempts to persuade him to renounce his Catholic beliefs, he remained steadfast and resilient. He chose to endure intense suffering rather than compromise his loyalty to the Catholic Church.

On 31 May 1591, Blessed Robert Thorpe was subjected to a brutal execution. He was hanged, drawn, and quartered in York, publicly displaying the severe penalties imposed on Catholic priests during this period of religious persecution.

In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope John Paul II decreed the veneration of Blessed Robert Thorpe on 10 November 1986. A year later, on 22 November 1987, the same Pontiff beatified him, honoring his life and sacrifice as one of the Martyrs of England, Scotland, and Wales.
