Beato Rogelio Cadwallador

Blessed Roger Cadwallador was born in 1566 in Stratton Sugwas, Herefordshire, England. He dedicated his life to the service of the Catholic Church, becoming a beloved figure within the covert Catholic community.

Roger's pursuit of knowledge led him to study at Rheims, France in 1591, and later at the English College in Valladolid, Spain in 1592. His exceptional aptitude for Greek studies set him apart as a gifted scholar. In 1593, Roger was ordained as a priest at Valladolid, marking the beginning of his spiritual calling.

In 1594, Roger returned to his homeland in England, where he embarked on a journey to minister to covert Catholics in the Herefordshire area. It was a time of intense persecution for Catholic priests, as the practice of Catholicism was outlawed and its followers faced severe consequences. Despite the dangers, Roger remained steadfast in his mission for sixteen years, providing spiritual guidance, comfort, and sacraments to those who sought solace in their faith.

However, Roger's tireless efforts to support the clandestine Catholic community eventually caught the attention of the authorities. On Easter of 1610, Roger was arrested for the crime of being a priest, a grave offense during that time. He was subsequently imprisoned and condemned to death.

On August 27, 1610, Roger Cadwallador suffered a brutal fate as he was hanged, drawn, and quartered at Leominster, Herefordshire. His martyrdom serves as a testament to his unwavering dedication to his faith and his commitment to his mission, even in the face of grave danger.

Blessed Roger Cadwallador is honored and remembered for his sacrifice and devotion to the Catholic Church. His feast day is celebrated on August 27th. He is also recognized as one of the Martyrs of Douai on October 29th and as one of the Martyrs of England, Scotland, and Wales on November 22nd.

After centuries of veneration by the faithful, Roger Cadwallador was finally recognized officially by the Catholic Church. On November 10, 1986, Pope John Paul II declared Roger a martyr through a decree of martyrdom. A year later, on November 22, 1987, Pope John Paul II further honored Roger's memory by beatifying him.
