Beato Santiago Mestre Iborra

Blessed Santiago Mestre Iborra, also known as Father Santiago of Rafelbuñol, was born on 10 April 1909 in Rafelbuñol, Valencia, Spain. He was the seventh of nine children born to Onofre Mestre and Mercedes Iborra. Santiago was baptized just two days after his birth and showed early signs of piety and devotion.

His strong religious inclination led him to join the Capuchins at the young age of 12. He entered the Order and made his perpetual profession in Rome, Italy on 21 April 1930. Santiago's commitment to his calling led him to be ordained as a priest in Rome on 26 March 1932.

Father Santiago was a well-educated theologian, earning a degree in theology from the prestigious Gregorian University. He had a deep passion for spreading the faith and helping others understand Catholic teachings.

Father Santiago's dedication and leadership skills led him to be appointed as the deputy director of the seminary in Massamagrell, Spain. He served in this position with great devotion and inspired many young men in their own vocational journeys.

Sadly, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Father Santiago's life was tragically cut short. He was martyred for his faith on 28 September 1936, in Rafelbuñol, Valencia, Spain. His body was callously dumped in a mass grave at the Massamagrell cemetery. However, his memory and sacrifice were honored when his remains were later re-interred in his hometown of Rafelbuñol.

Father Santiago's relics were enshrined in the chapel of the Capuchin Martyrs at the convent of the Maddalena in Massamagrell, where his fellow martyrs were also honored. His death and the witness of his unwavering faith led to his veneration by the Catholic faithful.

On 20 December 1999, Pope John Paul II declared Father Santiago Mestre Iborra a martyr, recognizing his heroic death for the sake of his faith. His beatification followed on 11 March 2001, with Pope John Paul II officially declaring him Blessed Santiago Mestre Iborra.
