Beato Scipionjérôme Brigeat Lambert

Blessed Scipionjérôme Brigeat Lambert, born into the French nobility as the son of a royal advisor and treasury official, dedicated his life to the service of God and the Church. After studying in Ligny and Paris, he pursued theological formation at the seminaries of San Luis and San Sulpice. Ordained a priest in 1756, he earned a doctorate in theology at the College of Navarra in 1760. His ecclesiastical ministry flourished as he served as Canon and Vicar-General of the Diocese of Avranches from 1761 until 1788, diligently guiding his flock.

With the onset of the anti-Christian persecutions during the French Revolution, Blessed Lambert fled to his birthplace of Ligny to avoid the violence. Authorities tracked him down and demanded he swear an oath of loyalty to the revolutionary constitution, a demand he resolutely refused, remaining steadfastly loyal to the Church. Consequently, he was imprisoned on the Hulks of Rochefort, condemned to die. In his final hours, he spent his time nursing and ministering to fellow prisoners, embodying Christ’s compassion even in the face of death. He died a martyr for his faith, his unwavering fidelity to the Pope and the Church sealing his witness. His legacy endures as a powerful testament to the courage required to uphold the faith amidst persecution.
