Beato Teófilo Montes Calvo

Blessed Teófilo Montes Calvo was a Dominican friar who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on October 2, 1912, in Gumiel de Mercado, Burgos, Spain. Teófilo dedicated his life to the service of God and joined the Dominican Order.

During the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution was rampant, and many priests and religious were targeted because of their faith. Teófilo, along with many of his Dominican brethren, faced intense hostility and violence as they steadfastly remained true to their religious convictions.

On September 13, 1936, Teófilo Montes Calvo was martyred in Madrid, Spain. His courageous faith and refusal to renounce his beliefs led to his martyrdom. He embraced his fate with unwavering faith and trust in God, displaying immense bravery in the face of persecution.

Years after his death, Teófilo's life and martyrdom were recognized by the Catholic Church. On June 26, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed him to be venerable, acknowledging his heroic virtues. On October 28, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified Teófilo Montes Calvo, officially declaring him blessed.
