Early life
Tiburcio Arnáiz Muñoz was born at Valladolid on 20 April.[1] He was poor, left fatherless at 5, with a mother who struggled to look after him and his sister Gregoria.[1] At 13 he fulfilled his dream of studying in the seminary, but soon could attend only as an external student because he had to help at home, working as sacristan in the convent of the Domenicane, where his sister later entered.[1] After obtaining a doctorate in theology at Toledo in 1896, while already a parish priest, he decided that the heart of Jesus must be the centre of his life and that he should enter the Compagnia di Jesus.[1]
Ministry
In 1902 he entered the seminary of the Compagnia di Jesus at Granada, resolving never to ask for anything, to be content with what he was given, and never to refuse any work.[1] He taught the poor to read and write, and worked to relieve suffering and ignorance in homes, in hospitals and inside prisons.[1] At Malaga, where he lived for many years, he set up schools and workshops for the poorest inhabitants of the corralones, the poorest outskirts of the city, where the Church had never entered and priests were greeted with dead rats thrown at them.[1] His missionary work then specialised in preaching the word of God and in spiritual exercises, which he offered also to the poor and the illiterate, the approach that became known as the doctrinas rurales.[1] It was said that he slept and ate very little, and that he heard confessions and prayed until late at night.[1]
Death and recognition
While preaching the novena of the Sacred Heart of Jesus he fell ill with bronchopneumonia and died within a few days, on 18 July 1926, murmuring the words: 'How beautiful is the heart of Jesus'.[1] His body was exposed for three days to the veneration of the people, and his coffin was carried in procession through the streets of the city.[1] The bishop of Malaga, in his funeral homily, called him a 'madman of Jesus'.[1] He was beatified by Pope Francis on 20 October 2018.[1]

Beato Tiburcio Arnáiz Muñoz, también conocido como Tiburcio del Sagrado Sacramento, nació el 11 de agosto de 1865 en Valladolid, España. Fue ordenado sacerdote el 20 de abril de 1890 y sirvió como párroco en Villanueva de Duero en 1893.
