Beato Tomás Ramírez Caba

Blessed Tomás Ramírez Caba, also known as Blessed Tomás Ramírez Caba, was a married layman and a devoted father in the diocese of Quiché, Guatemala. Born on December 30, 1934, in Chajul, Quiché, Guatemala, he lived a simple and humble life, dedicated to his faith and service to the Church and community.

Tomás Ramírez Caba faithfully served as a sacristan in his local parish, actively participating in the liturgical life of the Church. As a sacramental assistant, he played an essential role in preparing the sacred vessels and ensuring the smooth organization of the church's ceremonies.

During a time of great social and political unrest in Guatemala, Tomás Ramírez Caba fearlessly stood firm in his Christian beliefs, even in the face of adversity. He lived out his faith with unwavering courage and commitment, providing an inspiring example of how to integrate faith and daily life.

Tragically, Blessed Tomás Ramírez Caba's strong convictions and active involvement in the Church made him a target for those who sought to suppress the Catholic faith in Guatemala. This led to his martyrdom on September 6, 1980, in Chajul, Quiché, Guatemala.

His life, marked by integrity, humility, and unwavering dedication to God, earned him the recognition and veneration of the faithful. On January 23, 2020, Pope Francis officially declared Tomás Ramírez Caba a martyr, acknowledging his death as a result of hatred for the Catholic faith.

Finally, on April 23, 2021, Pope Francis beatified Blessed Tomás Ramírez Caba, bestowing upon him the title of "Blessed." The beatification recognition ceremony was solemnly celebrated in Santa Cruz del Quiché, Guatemala, where the local faithful and pilgrims from all over the world gathered to honor this courageous layman.
