Beato Vicente de Laquila

Blessed Vincent De Laquila, also known as Vincent of L'Aquila, was a Catholic saint and a member of the Friars Minor. It is believed that he may have trained as a shoemaker in his youth before he joined the order at the tender age of 14. He took up residence at the convent of San Giuliano outside L'Aquila, Italy and spent his formative years in a humble hut nestled in the forest near the convent. Vincent rarely left his secluded dwelling, venturing out only for religious services, Mass, or when called upon by his superiors.

Throughout his life, Blessed Vincent was known for his mystical experiences. It was reported that he had the ability to levitate and would seem unconscious while engaging in deep prayer. These extraordinary occurrences drew attention to his sanctity and reinforced his reputation as a devout and spiritual man.

Vincent's devoutness and unwavering faith had a profound impact on those around him. He was assigned to various convents in Penne and Sulmona for extended periods, where his exemplary example inspired others to deepen their lives in faith and embrace their vocations with renewed vigor. His humility and gift of prophecy made him a sought-after advisor, even by the nobility. Princes and queens sought his advice, recognizing his wisdom and closeness to God.

However, Vincent's life was not without hardship. Hobbled by gout and his austere lifestyle, he eventually became confined to his hut in the forest near the San Giuliano convent. Despite his physical limitations, he spent his final days in prayer and offering spiritual advice to the visitors who sought his guidance.

Blessed Vincent De Laquila passed away on the evening of August 7, 1504, in his humble hut. According to accounts, at the moment of his death, Blessed Christina Ciccarelli saw his soul being carried to heaven by angels. The entire forest surrounding Vincent's hut was said to have been illuminated by a great light. This remarkable event led to a tradition of lighting the convent and the nearby forest every year on the eve of his death, August 6, as a way of commemorating his life and witnessing to the spiritual light he brought to the world.

His mortal remains were interred at the church of the San Giuliano convent, where he had spent a significant portion of his life. Shortly after his death, the faithful began to venerate Vincent De Laquila as a holy man. His reputation for holiness continued to grow, and he was eventually beatified on September 19, 1787, by Pope Pius VI, who confirmed the cultus associated with him.

Blessed Vincent De Laquila's life serves as a testament to his unwavering commitment to God, his asceticism, and his profound spiritual influence on those around him. His legacy continues to inspire countless believers to deepen their faith, seek holiness, and rely on God's guidance in their lives. His feast day according to the Franciscan Martyrology is celebrated on August 7th.
