Saint Agatha of Sicily (c. 231 – c. 251 AD) was an early Christian virgin and martyr. Born in Catania, part of the Roman Province of Sicily, she faced persecution for her faith around 251 AD. According to tradition, Agatha was known for her piety and devotion, leading to her arrest and subsequent torture by the Romans. She is venerated as one of several virgin martyrs whose names are recited in the Canon of the Mass during Holy Week. Her feast day on February 5th is celebrated with special significance, marking the last date by which New Year's greetings can be sent according to tradition.
