Aidan of Lindisfarne, also known as Naomh Aodhán (died August 31, 651), was an Irish monk and missionary who played a pivotal role in converting the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity in Northumbria. Born on the island of Ireland, Aidan founded the ministry cathedral of Lindisfarne Priory, which became his base for evangelistic work. As its first bishop, he traveled extensively throughout the countryside, spreading the gospel not only among the Anglo-Saxon nobility but also reaching out to the socially disenfranchised, including children and slaves. His tireless efforts earned him the title of Apostle of Northumbria, a recognition that extends across various Christian denominations, including the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, and Anglican Communion.
