Saint Ailbe, known also as St Elvis (British/Welsh), Eilfyw or Eilfw, was a pre-Patrician bishop and saint of Ireland. He is often regarded as the first bishop of Emly in Munster and later became the patron saint of that city. While little is definitively known about Ailbe's life, he is venerated as one of the four great patrons of Ireland. According to Irish sources from the 8th century, Ailbe was the first bishop of Emly. Later Welsh traditions credit him with baptizing Saint David, and very late sources even suggest a local Welsh genealogy for him, making him an Ancient Briton. He is celebrated on September 12 and is the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly.
