Arsenius the Deacon (354 – 450) was a Roman imperial tutor who, after a life of service to the empire, retired to Egypt where he became an anchorite and one of the most highly regarded Desert Fathers. His teachings were influential in shaping asceticism and the contemplative life, earning him the title 'the Great.' He is celebrated on May 8 by both Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches, though his date was changed from July 19 after the Second Vatican Council. In the Coptic Orthodox Church, he is honored on 13 Pashons.
