In the vast, shimmering silence of the Egyptian desert, where the heat shimmers over the sands and the winds carry the scent of dry earth, a figure emerged not as a king or a scholar, but as a wanderer. This was the life of the holy anchorite known as Saint Bessarion. He is remembered not for the construction of great cathedrals or the writing of theological treatises, but for the radical poverty of his existence.
