Saint Ferdinand III of Castile

Ferdinand III, known as the Saint (el Santo), reigned as King of Castile from 1217 and King of León from 1230, with Galicia following in 1231. Born to Alfonso IX of León and Berengaria of Castile, Ferdinand was a key figure in the Reconquista, earning the title Athleta Christi ('Champion of Christ') for his military victories against Islamic rule in the Iberian Peninsula. His campaigns secured the permanent union of the crowns of Castile and León, expanding the dominion southward into the Guadalquivir Valley. Through his efforts, cities like Baeza, Úbeda, Jaén, Córdoba, and Seville were annexed and repopulated, establishing boundaries for the next two centuries. Ferdinand was canonized in 1671 by Pope Clement X, with numerous places named after him across various countries, including San Fernando cities and churches.
