Saint François de Laval de Montmorency

François de Laval, born on April 30, 1623, and passing away on May 6, 1708, was a pivotal figure in the establishment of Catholicism in New France. As the Apostolic Vicar from 1658 to 1674, he played a crucial role in spreading Christianity among the indigenous populations. In 1674, he became the first bishop of Quebec, a position he held until his retirement due to poor health in 1688. Despite his departure from active duties, Laval remained engaged with the mission field until his death. His legacy includes founding the Séminaire de Québec in 1663, an institution that continues to serve as a cornerstone of Catholic education and ministry in Canada. François de Laval was beatified by Pope John Paul II on June 22, 1980, and canonized by Pope Francis on April 3, 2014.
