Henry St. John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke (September 16, 1678 – December 12, 1751), was a British Tory politician and philosopher who played a significant role in the political landscape of his time. Born into nobility, he supported the Church of England politically despite holding antireligious views and opposing theology. Bolingbroke was a leader among the Tories and advocated for their cause through his influential periodical The Craftsman (1726–1735). He is best known for disseminating the Whig theory of the Ancient Constitution, which he repurposed to serve anti-Walpole Tory principles. Bolingbroke's political career took a dramatic turn when he supported the Jacobite rebellion of 1715 against King George I. Fleeing to France, he served as foreign minister for the Jacobite pretender James Francis Edward Stuart before being attainted for treason and returning to England in 1723.
