Hilda of Whitby, also known as Hild (c. 614 – 17 November 680), was a significant figure in the early Christian Church in Britain. Born into a noble family, she became an influential abbess and played a crucial role in the Christianization of Anglo-Saxon England. Bede, in his Ecclesiastical History of the English People, describes her as a wise and respected leader who advised kings and founded several monasteries, including the famous monastery at Whitby. This site was chosen to host the Synod of Whitby in 664, an event that had profound implications for the development of Christianity in Britain. Hilda's legacy is marked by her wisdom and dedication to religious life, making her a revered figure in early English monasticism.
