Saint Leocadia

Saint Leocadia, also known as Sainte Léocadie or Santa Leocadia, was a Spanish martyr who lived and died around the year 304 during the Diocletianic Persecution. According to tradition, she was seized by the governor Decianus, who tortured her severely in an attempt to make her apostatize from Christianity. Despite his cruel treatment, Leocadia remained steadfast in her faith and was sent back to prison where she died from the effects of her torture. The feast day for Saint Leocadia is celebrated on December 9th, a date that has been recognized since the ninth century.

The veneration of Saint Leocadia began long before the ninth century, as evidenced by the mention of a church dedicated to her in Toledo and her inclusion in the Fourth Synod of Toledo in 633.
