Saint León

Ferdinand III, known as Ferdinand the Saint (Spanish: Fernando; 1199/1201 – 30 May 1252), was a pivotal king of Castile from 1217 and León from 1230. Born to Alfonso IX of León and Berengaria of Castile, Ferdinand secured the permanent union of the crowns of Castile and León through his reign. He earned the title Athleta Christi, meaning 'Champion of Christ,' after securing significant victories against Islamic rule in the Guadalquivir Valley following the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa. Through military and diplomatic efforts, Ferdinand expanded the dominions of Castile, annexing important cities such as Baeza, Úbeda, Jaén, Córdoba, and Seville. His achievements established the boundaries of the Castilian state for centuries to come. He was canonized in 1671 by Pope Clement X, with numerous places named after him, including San Fernando, Pampanga, Ilagan, and San Antonio in Texas.
