Saint Michel Garicoïts

Michel Garicoïts, born on April 15, 1797, and died on May 14, 1863, was a French Basque Roman Catholic priest who founded the Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Bétharram. He dedicated his life to combating Jansenism, which posed a significant threat to the faith in his parish. Known for his fervent devotion to both the Eucharist and the Sacred Heart, Garicoïts served as a teacher and preacher, spreading the teachings of the Catholic Church with zeal. His efforts were recognized by several Popes: Pope Leo XIII initiated his sainthood cause in mid-1899, Pope Benedict XV named him Venerable on December 10, 1916, after confirming his heroic virtue, and he was beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1923. Finally, Pope Pius XII canonized him as a saint of the Roman Catholic Church on May 14, 1947.

Garicoïts' legacy is celebrated through his feast day on May 14, and he continues to be venerated for his dedication to combating heresy and promoting devotion to the Sacred Heart. The faithful seek his intercession in matters related to faith and spiritual growth.
